QUESTIONS & ANSWERS REGARDING THE STATE DINNER
 
President George W. Bush and Mrs. Bush are honored to host Her Excellency, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President of the Republic of the Philippines and Attorney Jose Miguel T. Arroyo for the State Dinner on Monday, May 19, 2003.

Who is invited to the State Dinner?
A diverse representation of guests from across the country, including elected officials, cabinet members, community leaders, academicians and civic leaders, will attend. Invitations were created by the White House calligraphers and mailed beginning in early April. The State Dinner is the result of three months of planning.

Who prepared the menu?
White House Chef Walter Scheib, who has served his creations at the White House for 9 years, worked in conjunction with Assistant White House Chef Cris Comerford. Roland Mesnier is the White House Pastry Chef responsible for creating the dessert. His works of art have pleased guests and residents for 23 years.

Where does the dinner take place?
The dinner will take place in the State Dining Room on the State Floor, following a reception in the East Room of the State Floor. Entertainment will also take place in the East Room. The guest receiving line will take place in the Blue Room.

How many guests will be in attendance?
One hundred thirty guests will be seated in the State Dining Room.

How are guests seated?
A member of the Bush Administration will serve as the table host at each of the 13 tables. A member of the Philippine delegation sits to the table host's right. Traditionally, couples are seated at different tables.

What are the floral arrangements?
Chief Florist Nancy Clarke, who has worked in the White House Flower Shop for more than 20 years, has helped Mrs. Bush select a beautiful arrangement of pink and white peonies in a crystal pedestal bowl. The flowers began arriving at the White House on Thursday, May 15.

How are the tablesettings decorated?
Cranberry colored damask tablecloths will cover the thirteen tables. The Clinton China, which is ivory with a gold rim, features a vignette of the White House; the Vermeil Flatware; the President's House crystal pattern, first made by the Morgantown glass guild in 1961 for Mrs. Kennedy; and crystal candlesticks, with ivory colored tapers, will be used at each table. The floral centerpieces will be in crystal pedestal bowls.

What is the itinerary for entertainment?
· Marine Orchestra, during the guest reception in the Grand Foyer and throughout dinner. · Brass horns and strolling strings during dessert in the State Dining Room. · Mezzo-Soprano Susan Graham and pianist Brian Zeger will perform the after-dinner entertainment in the East Room. · Marine Dance Band in the Grand Foyer following the East Room entertainment.

What is Mrs. Bush's attire?
Mrs. Bush will wear an Oscar de la Renta gown made of gold matelasse in a floral pattern. The column-shaped gown features a v-neck, long sleeves and buttons to the waist with a self-tie at the waist. For her jewelry, Mrs. Bush will wear pearls. Upon arrival, President Arroyo gave Mrs. Bush a state gift of pearl earrings. The earrings are 14mm South Sea Pearls mounted on finely worked flowers and leaves of Philippine-mined 18K yellow gold. While Mrs. Bush can not keep gifts from heads of state, she is allowed to wear them when she is with them. In addition to the earrings, Mrs. Bush will wear a three-strand pearl necklace that was a gift from President Bush.

Who are the Social Secretaries?
The Social Secretary is Catherine Fenton. Mrs. Fenton served as Deputy Social Secretary for President Reagan for five years and to former President Bush for four years. Her deputy is Jeanie Figg who served in President Reagan's and former President Bush's office.

In the last twenty years, when were State Dinners hosted for Presidents of the Philippines?
President George H.W. Bush hosted a State Dinner for President Aquino, during her visit to Washington, D.C. on November 9, 1989.
